"I am French of Chinese origin, my husband is French. We have a daughter aged three and half.
Since she was born, we have been speaking both French and Chinese at home. We moved to Belgrade nearly three years ago. Our daughter started to go to a Serbian kindergarten at one. There she has learnt to speak Serbian as the normal language to interact with teachers and friends. According to the school director she is having a good vocabulary, equivalent to an average Serbian kid of this age. Today she can speak fluently both French and Serbian.
She understands Chinese but can speak only a little, having too little opportunities to use Chinese. Using several languages has not postponed her learning of speaking, she started saying words quite early and she could do small sentences at 20 months old. She has always been naturally choosing the right language depending on the person, never mixing them up. She knows that we understand only a little of Serbian and has always spoken French to us. She is very open and talkative and loves chatting with children and grown-ups.
We believe that, for her, multilingualism has contributed to developing her taste for languages and speech. She has also recently started English lessons and she loves it too!"
